When designing a website it is important to keep the main target group in mind. When making a website for Kenya it is important to make the website load quickly on slow connections.
Since most web design is made in places with high speed Internet connections little or no regard has been made to slow connections. This is true for most standard Content Management Systems like Joomla and Drupal. Selecting a standard theme for a CMS and modifying it will most likely give you a slow website.
At Lamu Software we create all our websites from scratch and can thus control the amount of data traffic that each page on your website requires from an Internet connection.
When designing for an audience with limited Internet connections we will make sure that:
- The size of all images are reduced
- Images and pages are cached in your browser
- Stylesheets and JavaScripts used on every page are kept separate from the page content and cached as well
- Stylesheets and JavaScripts files are kept to a minimum. Each stylesheet and javascript file requires an additional request to your web server and keeping requests down improves the loading speed of your pages.
- All files are compressed when possible. JavaScripts are also minified.
